DOWNERS GROVE, IL -- El Sierra Elementary School has some new features on its playground that District 58 officials are really hoping students will enjoy. The new features aren't slides or swing sets, they're "Buddy Benches," colorful benches that aim to encourage empathy and friendship between students.

These "Buddy Benches" can be found on the school's primary and intermediate playgrounds. They're the brainchild of a group called Mothers Against Violence In Schools (MAVinS).

Students are encouraged to sit on the bench if they feel left out and need a friend to play with. Likewise, other students are encouraged to befriend students who are sitting on the bench.

The Buddy Benches came to District 58 as a result of a partnership between the Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club (DGJWC) and MAVinS. The DGJWC has led the local Buddy Bench initiative throughout the village, donating a total of 11 benches and leading informational workshops, according to a post on the District 58 website.
